About Thai Hill Tribe Silver
Hilltribe silver originates in the mountainous north of Thailand around Chiang Mai. Various hill tribe artisans have carried out their crafts here for over 100 years having moved from Tibet through China. The silver used is very pure, between 99.5% and 99.9% pure silver, a much higher silver content than the 92.5% used in Sterling silver. The final fraction being the solder used to complete the piece. This higher silver content makes for a softer metal and is therefore easier to shape into all the unique and wonderful styles and intricate tiny beads. It's all handmade using techniques and tools that have been passed down through the generations so each piece will vary slightly, adding to their charm.
These pieces are not hallmarked in any way, but we can guarantee their Fair Trade origins as our supplier is himself a member of the Akha tribe.
Hill Tribe silver is a beautiful addition to any jewellery creation and your purchases will help sustain traditional art and crafts in this remote area, providing the Thai hill tribe people with a reliable, steady source of income.
